 “Tất cả những đau khổ của thân phận con người phải biến dạng thành hương thơm tỏa đến ngàn sau, khi thân thể đã bị gió bão cuốn đi và mảnh linh hồn biến thành sương khói. Đó là lãng mạn mà nhập cuộc.

  

“Trong thế giới của văn chương sáng tạo, phỏng dịch tức là tái tạo từ ý tưởng của tác giả đầu tiên; nếu cần thiết, trở thành một thông điệp mới cho hoàn cảnh, thời gian, và không gian mới. Vì thế, người dịch thơ trở thành người làm thơ: Lãng mạn tức là nhập cuộc.”

Mảnh linh hồn đã tan thành sương trắng

Mà vẫn còn đau khổ đến nghìn thu

Đây cánh huệ tươi, huyền diệu giữa sa mù

Tôi đã hái từ vườn anh trí tuệ

Nhưng khi gió thổi qua thành dâu bể

Thì mảnh hồn của huệ chẳng nằm yên

Mà lung lay hương tỏa đến triền miên

Đuổi bởi gió về khu vườn vô thức

Chút hương ấy giờ đây còn sáng rực

Dịu ngọt sao, thơm nức cả khung trời

Như vòng tay ôm ngát một giây đời

Từ sương khói vượt tâm linh huyễn hoặc

Trong yên lặng của khu vườn tĩnh mặc

Anh mở tay ôm, hy vọng và tình yêu

Tuyệt đỉnh linh hồn, trí tuệ nương theo

Trích từ truyện ngắn đầu trong tuyển tập truyện ngắn cùng tên, Chín Chữ của Nàng (Văn Mới: 2005). Truyện cũng là một chương trong tiểu thuyết tiếng Anh Mimi and Her Mirror của Dương Như Nguyện (AmazonEncore, 06.2011) như truyện tiếp nối (sequel) của Daughters of the River Huong (Con Gái của Sông Hương.  

Bản dịch này dùng cách đánh vần mới, đề nghị của dịch giả G.S. Dương Đức Nhự. 

Mùa xuân 2012, tiểu thuyết Mimi and Her Mirror được giải nhất cuộc thi International Book Awards tổ chức ở Los Angeles.



Mùa thu 1976, Hội Sinh Viên Việt Nam tại Southern Illinois State University (SISU) tức Đại Học Nam Illinois có chừng hai chục hội viên. Đa số học ngành kĩ sư hoặc kế toán, và có học bổng từ hồi mới sang Mĩ trước 75. Sau khi Sài Gòn sụp đổ, phải cần cả một năm trời để họ điều chỉnh tình trạng di trú, thay đổi chương trình tài trợ sinh viên, ổn định tinh thần và tiếp tục đời sống. Lúc đầu không ai để ý, nhưng dần dần trong Hội ai cũng biết chuyện Chàng Khùng. Như một đạo sĩ kì dị, hắn thiết lập bản doanh tại hành lang tòa nhà Krost Hall, nằm giữa Trung Tâm Sinh Viên và Tòa Nhà Hành Chánh Woody. Hắn ngồi trên một tấm chăn, nhiều khi hắn đứng, khua chân múa tay và lẩm bẩm một mình. Quanh hắn là những truyền đơn và quảng cáo về tự do, dân chủ trong khối Thế Giới Thứ Ba.

Note from the editor:  In the following dialogue between DNN and reader vietbang at vietbang.com (conducted in Vietnamese), DNN presents and explains, among other things, her view regarding a new approach toward the translation of literary text: In the epoque of post-modernism, translators should be given maximum flexibility to express their subjective feelings about the text examined, and to exercise their creativity, so long as the ethics of translation is observed -- the translator will not distort the text to alter meaning. Within that boundary, the translator should not be bound to the same syntax or structure of language as the original author. This view, according to DNN, will extend the theory of interpretive creativity expounded by Roland Barthes, et al, to translators.  The translated novel, therefore, can become a "leap forward" from the original novel,  and can create a "local" feeling for the novel, which may help transcend any cultural obstacles in readers' appreciation.  In this view, the translator will also become a literary creative artist.  

Although historically, this has been done ad hoc in the art of translation as translators' choce, DNN wants to formalize this "norm" into a theory of literary interpretation made applicable to translators. She uses the Vietnamese translation of her novella Postcards from Nam as an example of how the ethics of translation and the creativity of the translator can be reconciled, toward the goal of enriching the creative process and allowing a translator to wear more of a creative hat.

Ý nghĩa của tựa truyện “Postcards from Nam” và quan niệm về dịch thuật, diễn giải, diễn tả, và diễn đạt văn chương

I. Thử bàn về vấn đề chữ nghĩa trong việc dịch thuật tựa đề

Vietbang (“VB”): Xin cô giải thích tựa truyện “Postcards from Nam” / “Bưu Thiếp Của Nam”? Lưu ý cô chữ “của” như “Con Gái Của Sông Hương.” Cô đặt nặng vấn dề sở hữu chủ về những bưu thiếp này, số nhiều phải không ? Trong cuốn Sông Hương cô cũng nói về bưu thiếp. Đó có phải là một biểu tượng /motif không, hay là một sự thể của cốt truyện?  

Xin nói trước, bài nói chuyện này có tính cách cá nhân. Đây không phải là một cuộc phỏng vấn của báo chí. Không hiểu vì sao một cuộc nói chuyện cá nhân của tôi bị đi thẳng vào google.com. Vì đã bị lên google.com, tôi xin phép ông được đem cuộc phỏng vấn cá nhân này vào cuốn sách mới.

Biểu tượng (motif) “postcards” đã được dùng bởi những soạn giả và nhà văn Mỹ. Trong chu trình viết của tôi, “postcards” có những ý nghĩa khác hẳn: hình ảnh những mảnh đời, tin từ xa, sự hiểu biết cô đọng, nhu cầu dược hiểu, thông điệp, tiếng nói v.v… Tất cả có chung các đặc tính sau: rất ngắn, rất trừu tượng, không được giải thích rõ ràng hay chân chất, mà chỉ là những ghi nhận hình như vội vã và thu hẹp trong khuôn khổ giấy, nhưng vô cùng rộng rãi về ý nghĩa.

 “Postcards” có thể được mong đợi, có thể bất ngờ, có thể mang niềm vui, mà cũng có thể mang nỗi buồn hoặc niềm ước ao lưu luyến.

Độc giả của “Daughters of the River Huong” sẽ thấy postcards trong đó, mang những bí mật của quá khứ đầy nghi vấn, Nhân vật chínhphải bỏ qua những nghi vấn về quá khứ để tìm thấy sự an bình trong tâm hồn.

Postcards from Nam có thể là postcards gửi từ phương nam, từ nước Nam, từ một nơi chốn nào đó về phía Nam, từ cộng đồng hay tổ quốc mang tên Nam.  Mà cũng có thể từ một người tên Nam. Ý nghĩa “tác giả” (authorship) của “bưu thiếp” là thế nào? Người chụp hình, người vẽ, hay người gửi? Ai là sở hữu chủ của bưu thiếp? Người gửi? Hay người nhận? Ở thời điểm nào?

Cho nên cụm từ “postcards from Nam” rất mơ hồ mà xúc tích.

“Bưu Thiệp Của Nam” không hẳn là câu dịch chính xác nhất của tựa đề tiếng Anh. “Cánh Thiệp từ Nam” chính xác và thơ mộng hơn. “Bưu Thiếp Của Nam” là Nam’s Postcards.  Sau khi Mimi nhận được postcards rồi, có thể nói là “Mimi’s Postcards.”

Số nhiều hay số ít trong cụm từ “Cánh Thiệp từ Nam” hay “Bưu Thiếp Của Nam” không quan trọng cho ý nghĩa (semantics).  Trái lại, trong “NHỮNG đồi hoa sim,” chữ NHỮNG rất quan trọng. Cảnh vật muốn tả là nhiều ngọn đồi bát ngát hoa sim tím cả chân trời. Ngược lại, một cánh thiệp hay nhiều cánh thiệp đều mang một ý nghĩa biểu tượng (symbolic meaning) như nhau.
